How To Spot A Fake!

7 Ways to Spot Counterfeit Electrical Goods

Counterfeit electrical goods are a real danger in the workplace and at home for many reasons:

  • They can cause fire, spark, overheat, cause electrocution or start a fire
  • Most counterfeit goods are untested for safety which means they probably don’t comply with standards
  • They likely don’t comply with industry safety standards

Apart from being more aware about where you purchase, there are plenty of ways to spot counterfeit goods – here are just a few!

1. Price

Is the Price too low ? Many fakes are for sale at below the recommended retail value. However, there are also resellers on marketplaces like Amazon or eBay that have permission to sell within certain margins – check if you are buying from a reseller  and don’t be afraid to ask!

2. The Location of The Seller

Do they have a website? Do they have a legitimate UK address? If there is no address or a P.O. Box, be wary. Fake electrical goods are often manufactured overseas and are not always tested for safety.

3. Check the Mark

The CE marking is an indicator meaning that a product complies with European Legislation. If it is not manufactured in Europe this mark will not be present. However, many fake markings are placed on items not made to a standard accepted in Europe. There is also a Chinese Export mark that is similar to the CE mark with the letters closer together. From January 2023 a new UKCA marking will replace CE markings for manufactured goods. Don’t be afraid to ask for photos

4. Check Yourself!

If you love to shop for the cheapest items at dodgy retailers online without asking any questions – when it comes to electrical items, this could put you at risk – is that bargain worth it?

5. Labels

Misspelled items, typos, errors and misprints on a label is a sure sign that it has not been made at a reputable manufacturer. Look for the underwriters Laboratories logo on the label

6. Contact Info

Manufacturer details should be on the label. If it’s not – take note! The manufacturer can’t be made liable if you don’t know who or where they are!

7. The Reviews

Too good to be true? It probably is. You can spot a fake review so watch out for glowing references that seem a little overenthusiastic or boilerplate cut and paste style reviews.

We all love a bargain but make sure you stay safe! We can often see an item is fake because it is just not right but these 7 ways will help you identify if you’ve been conned online or down the local market.
