What Happens in a PAT Test?

A full PAT test includes:

1) A formal visual inspection of the appliance to check that all plugs, cables, fuses etc are safe to use. This can take a while. Exension cables for example need to be fully unwound and the fuse checked for appropriate use.

You would be surprised how many dangerous cables, broken plugs or incorrect fuses are  used broken in the hope that it ‘won’t happen to me’, but research shows that faulty electrical appliances cause 43 fires a week* with extension cables, toasters, fridges, freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers accounting for a large percentage of fires after ovens.

2) An in-depth check using specialised PAT testing equipment. Tests include earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance of the appliance. This ensures that your item is earthed as appropriate, and that there has not been any degradation that may cause a short circuit or a fire. It is important to maintain a safety regime particularly if appliances have extensive use or get moved around.

In most cases the item will then be logged and a report created and in some cases a certificate of testing will be provided (usually on request)
